I am supposedly a Maxwell Family historian and to be utterly truthfull I have no idea what criteria is being used in the USA to decide what "septs" belong to what families. Truth be known, because the Maxwells are not a 'clan' but a family with a single progenitor they have no septs what so ever. However in North America things are different. I would contact the society you discovered this link through and ask them.
