Do you think it is correct for some Maxwell sites to claim certain surnames as septs of the Maxwells when you currently have no recognised Chief. The Lord Lyon is obviously not able to make a judgement particularly as there is no chief. The Peacock claim is purely based on one charter, c.1258 Annan, from the register of the Priory of St.Bees.This could equally be associated with the Bruces, slightly later with the Dunbars. Are the other sept names based on such little evidence. I am a supporter of septs where there is strong consistent evidence of one families loyalty to another. Unfortunately I think we Peacocks will have to accept there were no branches that were ever large enough to be considered septs of any clan.
