I hit a brick wall while researching my g-g-grandfather, William Bailey Maxwell, and am hoping someone on this forum can help me. William was born March 14, 1821 in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois, the only child of Richard Maxwell and Ruth Hodge. Richard’s parents were unknown, and Ruth was born March 2, 1800 to John Hodge and Elizabeth Williams. Richard and Ruth were married April 20, 1820 in Shawneetown and Richard died in September of 1821. On December 27, 1822, Ruth married William Barnett and the family moved to Missouri.

Probably, the most reliable research on the ancestry of William Bailey Maxwell is that done by BYU, and I have it if anyone wants it. They came up with several possible family lines, but nothing concrete. Basically, they hit the same brick wall that I did.

My own family lore includes a connection to Pete Maxwell of Fort Sumner, New Mexico (Lucien Maxwell, Hugh Maxwell). Family tradition has it that my grandma referred to this Pete Maxwell as  "Uncle  Pete" and that she went to visit him in Arizona when he was an old man. I hoped that by researching Pete Maxwell, I might come across information on our Maxwell lines, but so far that hasn't helped either. It's likely there is some kind of connection between this family and mine. Hugh Maxwell would have been a few years older than my Richard Maxwell and Lucien Maxwell a few years older than William Bailey Maxwell, and they are all from Southern Illinois.

Any help would be appreciated.
