Born around the 1830s in New Zealand. Father was a Scotsman Thomas Maxwell mother a New Zealand maori. John was educated in Sydney Australia and may have been apprenticed to a saddler in Auckland NZ. He left NZ abroad the ship "Oriental Queen" bound for England in 1848-49 and was never heard from again. Did he make it to England or stop somewhere enroute?
