Have looked into this a little further and here are the names of those who set up a saw mill there. Note there is NO Maxwell mentioned. It is possible he was also there but we need to establish some evidence to support the theory. Capt James Herd had 50 men. 4 of the group, Scots, GILLIE, NESBIT, NIMMO and McLEAN set up a saw mill in the Bay of Islands. Perhaps we could collate what we have for got regarding Thomas Maxwell and provide references I shall start with these- 1833 July 31 Busby's note relating to a dispute between Thomas Maxwell and Gilbert Mair, regarding compensation for pulling down Maxwells grogshop at Toru Toru, the land being in dispute. 1836 April 21 Thos. Maxwell and H Henderson- Regarding theft of Pork from Mr Maxwell and assault on him by a native 1837 June Maxwell's Deed to purchase Waiheke 1838 November 25 William Webster, Thames complains that Mr Maxwell has taken 2,000 ft of sawn timber, and encourages Maori to rob Mr Webster. Maxwell intends coming to Busby to present his case. Hopes Busby will warn Maxwell about his conduct 1841 August 11 CLC 332 & 331 Maxwell's Land claims HAS ANYONE GOT ANYTHING EARLIER OR TO ADD? It is interesting to note that McLeod is also the name of the Scotsman whom Thomas Maxwell asked to "look after" his Waiheke Island property when he set of on his fateful trading trip. Robert Mcleod had tried to pursuade Thomas to leave his land deeds with him for safety-but Thomas said he preffered taking them with him. After Thomas didnt return McLeod intended to marry Te Ngeungeu. He was badly beaten at Waiheke Is around this time for insulting a maori women of rank....was it our Ngeu ngeu? |
