There are no tricks  Start with what you know - may be only your own birth and work backwards; talk to your relatives still alive but check their "facts", it is surprising what can be confused or "fudged".  Keep a note of everything you find or can't find and where you looked - saves time later. Tracing your family tree is not usually easy but it is fascinating and addictive! Finding this web site was a bonus.
