Hello - I am a descendant of Charlotte Maxwell, the sister of Charles William Maxwell, (Charlotte married William Freke Williams). I am mystified as to the origin of the story of a "Catherine Wade nee Bird", whom you mention, and about whom I have read online in "The Claimants". The real Catherine Wade Bird was born in Bath in 1803, and baptised under that name in St Swithins Church, Walcot, in that city, on March 30th 1803. Her father was James Bird, her mother Catherine, She had a sister Caroline. James Bird was an innkeeper, wine merchant and later (after 1822) was a lodging house keeper at 2 Great Pulteney Street, Bath. In the 1841 census Charles Maxwell is resident in this house with Catherine's parents James and Catherine Bird. Catherine the mother is noted as being born in Ireland. Charles's wife Catherine is clearly present aged 35 approx but unfortunately has been wrongly entered as "Charles" . Clearly Catherine Wade Bird is too young to be the parents of any of Charles William Maxwells supposed offspring. In his will he acknowledges his two natural sons William and Christopher, born 1817 and 1821 respectively, but no others. After Sir Charles's death in 1848 Catherine seems to have returned to Bath where she died at 1 George Street the house of her brother-in-law John Brownjohn. One of John Brownjohn's children has the name Wade as a middle name - so the name obviously features largely in the family - was Catherine Wade Bird's mother a Wade herself? The amazing stories about the wanton Catherine Nee Bird have presumably originated somehow and with some sort of foundation, but what? In the 1851 census Catherine Wade Maxwell is living as a very repectable widow in London, and has various relatives, including a Brownjohn and a Williams living with her. Has this helped, or just added to the confusion??!
