Women generally use their father's arms in their own lifetimes usually on a lozenge shaped shield. These are not inheritable and are often impaled with their husbands arms. However if the woman is an heraldic heiress, ie., she has no brothers, the arms become her inheritable right for her children and are often quartered with her husbands arms permanently and pass on the to the heiresses sons. This hopefully a simple explanation of quite a complex subject. |
