thanks for your message. I learnt some interesting details from your post too.

I've seen that book Ta Moko, and read what the author says about what the tuhi mean, but there are some more details that author doesn't know about what those tuhi in Ngeungeu's Moko Kauae mean and why she was allowed to choose her own husband - that isn't quite accurate but will save details for the email I will be sending you all soon. We also have copies of the portraits by G.F Angas in our family, my copies are on my study wall alongside other tupuna, they're looking over my shoulder now ;-) You can also see a portrait of your tupuna Patariki and my tupuna Anaru & Peti, among others, on the wall of the Wharenui at Umupuia - not sure if these were there when you visited last? The Wharenui is also called Ngeungeu after our ancestress, and there are some really big old copies of the portraits of Otara Te Irirangi & Ngeungeu there too.

There is another Ngai Tai marae in Howick, it is not so much a traditional iwi Marae as a community cultural centre, it was set up in 1936 by a Pakeha lady called Miss Emelia Maud Nixon in association with Ngai Tai and the Akarana Maori Association, and dedicated to the Ngai Tai people, it's called Owairoa Marae but better known locally as "The Tainui Garden of Memories". There is a small museum there called Te Raukohekohe and there was a Wharenui there called Torere, but sadly just recently the Torere Wharenui was attacked by arsonists.

I've never been to Torere Marae at Torere-nui-a-Hotu but I know some of our whanaunga there and I hope to visit sometime before the end of the Christmas holidays.

I've never heard our tupuna Peti referred to by the name "Powhitu" before, that's really interesting. We've always known her as Ngapaoa Peti Herewini, or just Peti Herewini. She was descended from the kahui Ariki of the Waikato/Tainui-confederation tribes of Ngati Naho & Ngati Mahuta, Ngati Haua, Ngati Hourua, Ngati Hinetu and Ngati Paoa. I think the name Te Wheoro might be a mix-up, that was actually Peti's brother's name, he was the paramount chief of Ngati Naho in his day, and both Te Wheoro and Peti were first cousins of King Tawhiao.

I'm wondering whereabouts you heard those dates, like how did you find out Ngeungeu & Thomas were married in 1828, that their first 3 sons were born in the Bay of Islands between 1830 & 1835? Is this family oral tradition? It might help solve some of the confusion I commented on in my most recent, lengthy post about Thomas's life in NZ.

The book you asked about is "Waiheke Island: A History" by Paul Monin which I've also referred to in my most recent longest post earlier today.
