Congratulations I think youve done really well obtaining the information youve supplied which I personally found very interesting. Like you I am in search of the same ancestor and have had little success in following the scottish connection other than knowing he originated from Aberdeen, Scotland and travelled out to NZ with a cousin. He apparently built a yacht which he sailed solo between Australia and NZ making him the first person who achieved this feat. I do recall seeing it in an encyclodedia when I was a child in NZ. As for history regarding family in Nz I can probably you with that information I have Thomas and Ngeungeu and sons. I decend from Patrick -Patariki Makiwhara. I also have your line Anaru was thought to be born around 1842 at Waiheke Island and he married Peti Powhitu Te Wheoro around 1862 at Mercer,Auckland. Patariki my GG Grandfather had 13 children my Grandfather George (Hori) produced 17 children. If any of this information is helpful to you Im happy to share it. I live in Germany and return to NZ each summer for a month so could post it then. If you wish to see what Ngeungeu and Te Irirangi look like there was were two paintings done of them which you will find in the book called Te Moko. The originals are currently in the Rex Nankivelle Museum Australia.
Thomas and Ngeungeu met and lived originally in the Bay of Islands, if you read the inscription in the book relating to the meanings of her tatooes you will note she was high born and had been given the unusual honour of being able to select her own husband hence the marraige between a Scotsman and a Maori princess, their son james is also standing alongside his mother.Their first 3 sons where born in the Bay of Island between 1830 to 1835?. Their marriage was around 1828 and Ngeungeu was thought to be some 12 years younger than Thomas. Thomas died around 1842. Many of the stories youve recorded tie in whith what our branch has been told over the generations.We organised a reunion at Umupuia, Maraitai for our branch about 4 years ago so researched as much as we could including asking our parents who are now in their 70s and 80s for their recollections.
Torere on the East Coast is also a family marae and we gathered information from there as well.
I hope this has been of some help and I would be interested in the title of the book you obtained on the Waiheke Island History.
