I am related to the Kirklands from SC and GA, although when they left SC to move to Alabama they changed their name to Kirtland. The name change came about because a branch of the family joined the LDS church, the rest of the family disowned them. The family kept moving after AL and ended up settling in UT.      Please contact me for any further info, I would love to compare notes. The farthest back I have been able to trace is Reuben Kirkland born 1760 married to Marry Clark born 1762 don't know death dates on either. After their son Reuben Jr died is when the name change came.
