Hi, I'm just getting started with my family genealogy, but I have the advantage of lots of work and information from my family and relatives. I could really use some advice on where to look for paticular documents and places. First, what I know; My Great Grandfather is the connection between Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland and Grandview, Manitoba, Canada. I understand that Forfarshire is now called Angus. Thomas Maxwell was born Christmas Day 1847 in Arbroath and died July 8, 1929 in Grandview. My Great Grandmother Annie Elizabeth (Airth) Maxwell was born March 4, 1853 in Edinburgh, Scotland and died December 30, 1945 in Grandview. They were married by John Fraser, Minister of West Free Church. Brechin. They were married at the Parish Church of Brechin, Corsehill, Brechin on June 10, 1885. The marriage certificate states Thomas was a Clothier in Dundee. I assume Dundee is a city. Thomas's father was Thomas Maxwell b. May 25, 1817 d. July 1860. I don't know if he was born in Angus St. Vigeans, where his father was born and died, or not. I also don't have his wifes' name yet. So we have three Thomas's, what do you suppose it is with the name Thomas? There's also a whole herd of them on mom's side too, the Worth's, but that's another story. We're back to 1066 with someone buddying up to William the Conquerer on mom's side. But back to the Thomas's. It's the last one I could use the advice for. Thomas b. 1847 son Thomas b. 1817 father Thomas b. 1787 @ Angus St. Vigeans grandfather christened May 28, 1792 died September 25, 1858 (possibly sept 26, 1854) married February 20, 1812 to; Marjory(ie) Petrie born 1792, died August 20,1847 Questions: Where is Angus St. Vigeans? Is it spelt Vvigeans? Is it in Forfarshire (now Angus)? Is there a source for the names of the churches in a given area, shire, parish, town, city, etc.. How about an easy way to find the address of the Parish Church of Brechin, Corsehill, Brechin. Knowing Annie Elizabeth (Airth) Maxwell was born in Edinburgh and her father was Thomas Airth, suggestions on a good place to start looking for Thomas Airth? Not that we haven't got enough Thomas's already. I appreciate any sugestions you have and would be happy to swap info if I have what you need. Where or what is Carruchan, ie the Maxwells' of Carruchan? Are there geneaology sources dating prior to 1066 AD. I am interested in any information about clan and sept swords, armour and battle dress, particularily the Maxwell Knights. still looking for the chief randy |
