Just setting the record straight in regard to the info stated in this thread. One, the Maxwell's did not ride with the outlaws listed in the letter you referenced. One, Belle Starr was dead by 1889 and Jesse Maxwell Jr, my great grandfather wasn't born until 1873, making him only 16 yrs old at her death. Two, the Younger brothers gang was dissolved by 1876, making my great grandfather 3 yrs old at that time. The outlaw connection comes from a shootout at the Pony Starr Ranch (Pony Starr is a cousin to Henry Starr, Belle Starr's husband) in Porum, OK which the Maxwell's were involved in and two Maxwell brothers were killed, A.E and George, and Jesse Maxwell Jr was wounded fighting against the infamous Davis/Starr families. The Davis's were notorious outlaws and cattle rustlers and murdered as they saw fit. After they, the Davis' were acquitted of an arsen charge filed by the Maxwell's, they burned their barns and houses. A fact to be remembered is that Jesse Maxwell Jr was a Deputy Sheriff from Texanna, Ok. The fights with the Davis'/Starr's took place around May 1911 and in April 1912 Jack Davis shot Jesse Maxwell Jr in the back in Muskogee, Ok while he was there on the day of April the fifteenth, subpoenaed as witnesses in a liquor case before the U. S. commissioner. Jack Davis was acquitted of the murder charge due to the fact the Davis' were a wealthy family and bought their way out of most of the charges ever filed against them. If you want to read more about Jesse Maxwell and his brothers, a full account of his murder and the trial of Jack Davis can be found in the Muskogee Daily Phoenix News Paper. While the Indian Territory of Oklahoma, and more specially around Porum, the tatics of both sides of the Porum Range War are questionable, but for all practical purposes, the Maxwell's were fighting on the side of the law, defending their home, land, cattle, and most important, their families. In the matter of Robert Riley Maxwell, brother to the Maxwell men listed in the letter mentioned in your post, I have not found any mention of his name being involved in the Porum Range War. For those of you following this thread, I hope it has been helpful and has pointed you in the right direction to find out more about the Porum Range War and the murder of Jesse Maxwell Jr. One more note: You can find a full write-up of the Porum Range War in the August 1971 issue of True West Magazine.
