My paternal grandmother was a Maxwell.  Her father, George Maxwell, came over from Ireland sometime around 1850.  He was born to George  Maxwell and Elanor Crawford September 4, 1829, and the family lived in Glencolumnkille, County Donegal.  He move around after coming to America, but eventually settled near Unionville, MO, where he prospered as a farmer.  He had two wives, Mary Elizabeth VanBuskirk (1841-1873) by whom he had 9 children, and Rebecca M. Tinkham (1852-1916), who bore him three more, one of whom was my grandmother.  George died September 16, 1914, at his farm in Seymour, Iowa.
In letters I have seen, it appears that he left family alive back in Ireland.  I haven't had time to trace them yet.
