Dear Carl: Billy was killed by Sheriff Garrett in Peter Maxwell's first floor bedroom, not Paula's second floor bedroom. He was not climbing thru a window but walked into the bedroom with pistol in one hand and butcher knife in another hand. The knife was to cut a piece of meat from a slab of beef hanging to age on the Maxwell's porch. The Maxwell in Albuquerque was likely Deluvina Maxwell, the Navajo housekeeper in the Peter Maxwell household. I have several sources you can read to get an accurate account of Billy's death. Contrary to rumors and fictionalized stories, Peter Maxwell did not alert Garrett of the Kid being in Fort Sumner. Bob |
