This is our James husband of Mary on Aurora however his date of birth could be anything from 1813 to 1820. Marriage certificate ,1839,states both of full age - I presume to be 21 years.Emigration records, 1839 ,show both to be 20. Mary was neither; Birth registration of Mary Stevenson born at Straiton,Ayr daughter of Peter Stevenson and Elizabeth Mcgill gives her date of birth as 18 April 1821 so she was 18 when married and emigrated. James and Mary's life has been quite well documented from arrival on Aurora until James death. James fell from his horse and was found dead Age on death certificate given as "about 44", age on headstone is indistinct but could be 37 years. His death was subject to a coroner's report but that gives no age. As for family in Liverpool - said to have been an Ayrshire family engaged in bookbinding, Mary said James was from Dumfries; Marriage certificate gives James father's name as David and his occupation as labourer. Mary's details on marriage certificate are all correct except her age. Are James'? Maxwell family in Scotland were apparently not communicated with and no sons of James and Mary were named David. |
