That is correct. It also means that there is no licence. This also indicates that they may have been in Birmingham some time. (Wendesbury is now part of greater Birmingham) Marriage by banns is less expensive than by licence, but if the young couple were about to go off around the world, the saving would have been significant. I think if they had been eloping they would not have waited around for Banns to be read, so the marriage was tolerated if not approved of. I take it you have a record of the marriage from the couple themselves in New Zealand and the marriage record was not found on the IGI or something and assumed to be their marriage because the names were the same? The next thing to check is the 1841 census to find James and Mary parents. The Family History Society of Dumfries and Galloway have transcribed their two counties census, so it is relatively easy to find out if David Maxwell was alive and living in Dumfries. I don't know about Ayrshire. |
