Bobbi, we corresponded a couple of years back. John Maxwell died in March 1838 in Carndonagh, Donagh parish, County Donegal. Rebecca Maxwell sailes on "The Provincialist" with Samuel and Alexander from Londonderry landed August 1850 in Philadelphia. John Maxwell's parents would have been William and Margaret Maxwell. John was born in County Tyrone as was his first son William Maxwell so he certainly lived there for some time before moving to County Donegal. He is not one of the 3 John Maxwells listed in the 1826 County Tyrone Tithe Appltment Books, your forebear Margaret Maxwell was born in August 1826 in County Donegal. Rebecca Maxwell's parents were Thomas Maxwell and Mary McKinley. In January 1822 they are in County Tyrone since son Thomas was born there. In the 1826 Tithe Applotment books there are 2 Thomas Maxwells on 1 person with 2 farms in Kilskeery Parish in County Tyrone also a William Maxwell in this same Parish. This Wiliam could be John's father or his brother who shows in Beechwoods records in 1840. to find 2 or 3 Maxwells in this small parish at the same time is suggestive of a relationship. There were only 26 Maxwell Families in all of County Tyrone in the survey. The may be from County Donegal becasue only 1 John and 1 Thomas and 1 William appear in the County Donegal Tithe Applotment Books 1827-1834 but in separate locations. Possible but less probable. I plan to check out the Kilskeery angle though PRONI records in Belfast or maybe a visit. With Maxwell a 1/1000 name and Thomas a 1 in 20 chance with male Maxwells and William a 1 in 10. the chances of getting a Thomas and a William in County Tyrone with 250000 the population in 1820's times about 20% for Presbyterians 1/1000 times 1 in 20 +1 in 10 was less than 1 person. So I am betting on Kilskeery as a start point William Maxwell Rancho Mirage |
