Diana there is a good chance of a connection. My William Maxwell married Elizabeth Eaton almost certainly in Raphoe in Janauy 1843. His father John Maxwell 1793-1838 was born in County Tyrone but died in march 1838. His wife Rebecca Maxwell (also single name) 1794-1874 was born in County Donegal as were at least 10 of the children. So I have a Maxwell family in County Tyrone and another in County Donegal. Maxwells are clustered in 2 locations in County Donegals Barony of Boyleigh and Bannagh in the south west and Barony of Raphoe in the East. There are a number on Maxwells from 1616 onward in Raphoe parish. Your Mary Maxwell is almost certainly daughter of John Maxwell listed in the 1630 Muster Roll in Raphoe, from which we can trace his landlord and likely the place of origin in Scotland. There were 5 Maxwell families in 1630 in County Donegal in the Muster Roll and by the 1857 Griffiths Valuation there were 41 Maxwell families. There are a good number of Maxwell names in each of the available document 1630-1857. Many of these are Raphoe on neighboring parishes. I am trying to get a lead on which is mine. WShat do you have that we can share. The odds appear quite good on a connection. Thanks William Maxwell Rancho Mirage California |
